An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is one of the most respected professions in the country today.

The full form of IAS and IPS and IFS is – IAS – Indian Administrative Service, and IPS – Indian Police Service, and IFS – Indian Foreign Service.


How to become an IAS Officer

To become an IAS officer one has to clear the UPSC Civil Services Exam. This is regarded as one of the toughest exams in the country and is held once every year.



UPSC – CSE exam is held in 3 stages:-

Stage 1- Preliminary/prelims Examination

Stage
2- Mains Examination

Stage
3- Personality Test or Interview

Those who clear all the three stages of the exam, enter into the civil services of the country, and become officers in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS),  Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other services.

One can appear in the next stage only after clearing the previous stage. Those who clear prelims can appear for Main Exam. Then those who clear Prelims and the Mains exam appear in the Interview.

Candidates who successfully clear the UPSC Civil Services Exam join the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) and get the first taste of life as an IAS officer.







IAS Officer Roles

IAS officers’ functional roles depend on the type of assignment they get.

There are three types of assignments given to them:


• Field
•State Secretariat/Public Sector Undertakings
•Central Secretariat

IAS Officer Salary and Perks

There is a total of 18 pay levels for IAS Officers. The Cabinet Secretary of the Union gets the highest pay of Rs. 250000. For newly inducted IAS officers the 7th Central Pay Commission has stipulated a basic pay of Rs 56100.

IAS officers also usually get the following perks while in service

• Get the houses according to their posting. District level gets best houses among other services in India.
• Security
• Household helpers depending on the requirement.
• Mobile, internet, and telephone charges.
• Government transportation is provided.
• During duty they get a free stay in government rest houses and bungalows.
IAS officers are entitled to a monthly pension after retirement based on their rank and length of service.

IAS Officer Positions/Career

The highest position for an IAS officer is the position of the Cabinet Secretary of India. In-state bureaucracy, the Chief Secretary of State is the highest one can go.

Following is the career path of most IAS Officer:-

• Phase I Training at LBSNAA
  At the allotted cadre, they get District level training
• Phase II Training at LBSNAA
with one of India’s diplomatic missions abroad – a week-long for foreign attachment.
• For three months Central Government attachment at the nominal position of an Assistant Secretary
SDM/Joint Magistrate/Sub Collector
• Municipal Commissioner, DDO/CDO
• DM/Collector
•  State Secretariats at Director/Joint Secretary level.
• At any stage of service after serving for a few years can opt for Deputation to the Central Government
• Additional/Principal Secretary in the Central Secretariat/State Secretariat
•  Chief Secretary of a state
•  Cabinet Secretary
